Even though I kinda have lost interest in what systemd can do, these are great. It's not often that a software release is so packed with this many features.
run0 —empower looks amazing!
Yes, it does! But it also kinda scares me a bit in the sense that any malicious process can then interfere with the empowered process as it is owned by the same user...
SystemD keeps growing in both functionality and complexity. I think that’s why it’s getting close to reach the point where the conditions for a reimplementation appear. But I don't say that this is going to kill the project or, unlike other init alternatives, propose different designs and config options. I mean a reimplementation that uses the same units and interfaces, just the basic functionality again. Not a new design, just a smaller core. As example of complexity creep like OpenSSL with LibreSSL.
The thing is, that systemd itself is big, but not that big as people think. The reason for that is that people see all components under systemd umbrella as part of the "core" or "init system". But that isn't really true. systemd is a lot of different tools that are stored in single monorepo and have tight cooperation of authors to make overall system working in the way they want.
The dlopen() stuff is particularly interesting in the context of last year's xz attack.
