"Bizarre" is a good way of describing it. I wonder to what extent, if any, they'll ever deliver on those initial promises, or if it'll just keep getting watered down.
It seems more a cult than anything. I just read through that article, and I have read some of the previous and later exposés when others had published some of the problems they found e.g. https://justinas.org/the-bizarre-world-of-v . I also went and looked at the posts on HN over the years, and the koolaid/vitriol is extra strong e.g. this guy https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=45082256
It's important with open source projects or commercial products (or whatever) to be honest about plans, actual reality, and known gaps. At the end of the day, people who don't have the years necessary to understand all the intricate details of one of these projects need to be able to get reliable information (and quickly) to make reasonable decisions regarding the fit-for-purpose aspect of a project. This particular project continues to fail that metric spectacularly, in almost every conceivable manner.
