Pick OS is a Living Fossil of Computer History

It's definitely worth following the links to parts 2 and 3.

Pick was indirectly responsible for me getting my first server (an Apple Network Server 500). The campus bookstore had got one to run their new inventory system which was based on UniVerse, a Pick derivative, but when Steve Jobs came back to Apple and convinced Gil Amelio to kill the product, the vendor said the system was EOL and refused to support it, even though they still supported AIX generally. So this brand new, barely used $10,000 server went in a corner and got surplused, and I got to keep it as part of my compensation for doing consultant work. UniVerse is still around as part of Rocket U2.

Hearing about the history of Pick OS itself from an actual Pick developer is fascinating, because most summary articles lump it together with the other "multivalue"/arrays-of-arrays DB-language combos like Caché...of which I have bad memories. That didn't involve Epic!
