From Mary Walton's book on W. Edwards Deming (I couldn't quite locate if this is from the 1988 book or the 1990 one):
“In a meeting of two hundred factory workers, a man said to me, ‘It is a matter of communication.’ I hear that word a dozen times a day — communication. I said, ‘Tell me about it.’ His machine had gone out of order and would make only defective items. He had reported it, but the maintenance men could not come for a long time. Meanwhile he was trying to repair it himself. The foreman came along and said to run it. ‘In other words, he told me to make defective items.’
“‘Where is my pride of workmanship?’ he asked me. ‘If the foreman would give me as much respect as he does the machine, I’d be better off.’
“He didn’t want to get paid for making defective items
I have much less experience than the author of this post, but I wanted to try and move some workflows away from CSV because of its many issues early in my career, was met with the 'CSV is easier for business workflows' response this author thought was very bad, but have come around to thinking that it's the correct take with time.
A very relatable post.
