I did not know this was common, I always thought this method placed too many constraints on other parts of the engine. But then again Factorio with its relatively small map fits the bill well.
First time I encountered this was Clonk, which required this to make multiplayer in a destructible 2D bitmap landscacpe (think: Worms) over dialup possible.

I... did not expect a Clonk reference here. I shared a flat with one of the developers (Peter) and knew and forgot far too many things about how it works and how they came to decisions :).
