Vivado 2026.1 will stop supporting Linux for its Basic (free) tier.

How frustrating. Vivado tooling was one of the ways I know my friends did FPGA antics and because the actual licensed copies are annoying to get... all this does is make it harder for enthusiasts to suggest or learn your tooling.

I don’t get why they don’t make the software free for personal use at least (and continue Linux support, since computer nerds like the kind of people who hack on FPGAs would generally prefer having that as an option)

A lot of complex but expensive software I feel like puts up an unnecessary barrier to entry for potential future customers. At least for stuff that’s just software it sort of makes sense because you don’t want to give it all away for free.

But this is AMD’s software for programming their own FPGA hardware. How are people supposed to learn if they have to pay $1200 a year plus the hardware cost itself to do larger designs?

I'm out of the loop, what's Vivado?
