Great PhD research topic. I love seeing these non-conventional processors.
Apparently, Scala can be used as an HDL with Chisel, which then compiles it down to SystemVerilog, as per the Vivado project creation script.
Haskell (well, technically a different language that shares syntax and semantics with Haskell) can also be used for HDL! I'm not talking about BlueSpec, I'm talking about Clash! Really cool to be able to run most of your design just like a regular program (not to be confused with simulating your design, although Clash can also do that).
Never heard of Clash. Thanks for sharing! I don't have any experience with pure functional languages, so the syntax is somewhat daunting, even for a UART example, but this is just a question of practice. In contrast to VHDL, the language seems much less explicit with regards to type annotations, kind of like Amaranth.
