I am not entirely sure why. It's bad ass to do it though.
Retrocomputing! Not a whole lot beats the feeling of seeing a game you build in an emulator work on the real thing. Doesn't surprise me people still chase that high.
I'm not sure if he mentions it but it hit me aftsr watching the video that the far blocks must be drawn outside-in and not (for example) left to right to prevent unwanted overdraw.
