Developing for Debugging (2025)

I might have missed it, but do these DNS system events get logged anywhere automatically when nobody's actively debugging? If yes, that must be an extraordinary amount of JSON* and I wonder how they deal with the volume. If not, is there some attempt to address the nonreproducible nature of networked system like DNS? It's cool omdb allows new employees to interactively tinker with it to understand Omicron, but when the support ticket from 3 hours ago says Something is wrong and you poke it with the debugger and it looks right (or it looks wrong but differently wrong), is there any recourse?
* I was surprised to read JSON is the data format. I love JSON and it's super useful, but I would have thought for this many logs, in a system like DNS where efficiency is really important, that a binary format would be used instead.
They might be logging update propagation in full, and requests in some more summarised way (and maybe in full when actively debugging). Most of irreproducibility comes from «who has what state and why is it out of sync (again)», which might be affordable to log completely for some designs/workloads.
