This is lovely work and I am glad to be aware of it now! Especially the hashtag thing.
If you load the page and all the text is missing, it’s because the site puts white text on a white background for visitors in light mode. To read the page, you have to change your browser or OS to dark mode or use a bookmarklet like Zap Colors.
It looks fine for me using Firefox on iOS, and I'm not using dark mode either.
Oh, I see the site also looks fine in light mode on Firefox 152 for Android. I only see the problem in these two older browser versions: Chrome 116 and Firefox 115 ESR for macOS.
I’m stuck on those versions of those browsers for now because they are the latest versions that are compatible with macOS 10.14, which I still need to run a certain 32-bit macOS app.
Really well thought out analysis. The only thing I disagree with is the inline hashtags analysis.
I agree that hashtags serve both purposes, categorization and discovery. But not that that is a problematic. In practice they work well for creating a decentralized ontology.
I also agree that tag spamming is in poor taste. Which is why I like inline hashtags. Having to work in the terms as part of a sentence serves as an incentive to reduce the number of hashtags. Generally I try to keep only use inline hashtags.
Occasionally I add up to two tags at the bottom. For cases where either you want to use a more specific tag. e.j. one tag for the FiFA world cup and another for the match you are talking about). Or when there are two tags commonly in use. e.j. Rust and Rustlang. Rustlang tends to be preferred as it's less likely to mix different topics as Rust the video game or the movie where Alec Baldwin killed someone.
That said, having a client that collects the hashtags and display them and metadata only is great. And shows the importance of having diversity of clients, accommodating different preferences and needs.
