If you’re not anti-AI, do you think this is morally right? That as customers we should let the for-profit companies trample us and then throw up our hands an say “if you can’t beat them join them?”
I guess what I mean to say is that as a community of people who are trying to make sure that AIs don’t end the open internet, we have literally never needed you more. My hope for the future comes form the idea that people like you will hold the torch high for others, like you are doing when you prepare them for the reality of self hosting. It’s just terribly dismaying to me though to see this useful advice come alongside the news that you yourself don’t think it’s worth it : (
I get not wanting to deal with public infrastracture yourself, when you spend too much time managing new accounts, etc. Personally I’d make accounts work like Lobste.rs and be mostly done with the nonsense.
There are other options besides GitHub. Codeberg for instance, which is a non-profit out of Germany and links directly to others doing similar things: https://docs.codeberg.org/getting-started/what-is-codeberg/#what-is-codeberg-e.v.%3F.
