Fresh out of college I had an interviewer kinda laugh to himself when I said devices should consist of reconfigurable FPGAs instead of dedicated processors. This article made me realise why I thought that (and still think, really), which was that the user should have the freedom to know what all these random microprocessors in their device are doing instead of having a black box that might be running Free Software at the OS-level. GNU's leniency for firmwares being equivalent to hardware since it's not end-user reconfigurable should be dropped in 2025. Make all the firmwares open.
