That effect grinds my gears for sure. It reminds me of loading images with 56k modem. I dont want that ever again.

Good. Personally, I encounter a page with this effect every two months or so. Recent examples:

Oh this is the worst, I was trying to look for a particular product on a major retailer's website a couple months ago and they had the stupid scroll fade thing so I couldn't just quickly scan until I found the thing, nope, had to scroll and pause and wait. I utlimately gave up and just went to the local store to walk up and down the aisle, it was a lot easier!

I made a little website for a local professional too, and she said she wanted some motion like this! I was like aaaaargh but did something just enough that she was happy without driving me totally nuts, used it only on select purely decorative items too.
