Turn your site into a place people can bump into each other

I love this idea! I first came across something similar on elle's site, and I really like the idea of making it a bit more accessible by offering a hosted service that you can just plug into your website :)
on elle's site
What a wonderful website!
Wonderful peace of art, but terrible website. Like whats happening here? Where can i click? Is it a game? :)
using mobile or desktop? On desktop just use the left/right arrows. Or just click/touch anywhere, above the head line, and the character will walk there
I figured it out. For me it's just not a website. It's great and awesome, but it's more of a game. I guess if you are working in design adjacent space and want to show of your skills it's a marvelous way to do it. 👍️
This seems very neat. I'm a little worried about putting an unmoderated communication space under my name though
As you should be. Approve-before-showing has to be the default for sites which don't have 24/7 moderation unless you want your sites to be over-run with spam, scams and worse.
Just don't keep/persist logs! The ones here also expire after a few mins @reezer
No not talking about those laws. Sorry, should have been more precise.
There has been a shift that even as a tiny hobby thing you have a lot of responsibility for content including comments. In parts of Europe you are required to essentially act like a big media house. Eg have direct contact information, moderate any sort of content, theoretically with UK Safety Act in place even have AUTOMATIC (it specifically says so) measures that prevent all sorts of things.
Caring about users privacy is trivial (no matter what people claim about GDPR it's mostly "common sense" of how you treat other people/your users). What isn't is the whole part about being a media publisher and handling the content of users.
These are laws as I understand were meant/claimed to reduce "fake news", but made what I did in the late 90s (having a personal home page without publishing full name and address) illegal. Called Impressumspflicht (imprint requirement) it effectively states that publishing things on the internet on your own website makes you equivalent to a media house. While there are conditions depending on details no matter how you look at it this is making doxxing trivial.
The story would be different if a holster/ISP would need to share informieren with authorities if there was a crime committed. That's how it was back in the days and I don't know about any refusal of doing so.
In the EU you have to publish your name and address if you have a website? Like if you make a blog on wordpress or github you have to reveal all this? I suppose the government won’t come after your personal blog but that seems quite strict.
Thanks for posting it here! I'm the site author. I'm so happy for the feedback I'm getting for it!
I really like it! The only minus is how quickly messages disappear (then you have to find the right person to click (who might be moving) to see it again).
Love it. Sometimes I worry about legal implications. Still I very much agree that this was the kind of charm that the early internet had. Now it's sadly largely outlawed or hard to do legally.
I understand that part of the charm is it being open source and backed by an individual, but I can't be the only one that remembers icq surf.
Cool if Lobste.rs engaged this. I come here to exchange comments. Seeing others here in the comment sections and browsing the feed would be communally cool.
Our IRC channel is quite active and a good place to befriend people. There are also splinter channels. :)
But yes... Actually showing the garden party would be <3
Ive seen something similar years ago on a flash site and been wondering ever since what a nice subtle way is to add some sign of life from other visitors. Love this!
