This is a lovely post and the process from sketches to the final shipped icon is very interesting. It's really cool that GNOME provides this service.
I am glad that we finally seem to have rediscovered color. I can't find anything in all these black-and-white GUIs that came into vogue around 2010.
Just wondering why icon design pinacled in 80s and 90s while graphics tooling was less advanced, people less paid and generally there worked less people in IT.
Big difference then and now is that back then you generally only had to make one icon for one resolution and one DPI, instead of having to design icons that are legible from 16x16 pixels to 1024x1024 pixels at all manner of DPIs.
HighDPI and its consequences...
I can vouch for this. My app got the full treatment a few months ago. I did my best on my own but Jimmac blew my attempt out of the water. I felt a little guilty asking, but as mentioned in the article designs like this really should help give a more polished feel to the Linux desktop in a way that coder created hack job SVGs don’t.
Thank you GNOME icon team!
