I’m underwhelmed by this. Are they going to be as obstructive as the previous owners of the (8-bit) IP? Will we have to scrabble round for new places to host ROMs for VICE? Is someone gonna come after me if I make a keyboard with a chickenhead logo key?
The ideal solution for the community (such as it is) would have been for the owners to evaporate completely. But capitalism’s gotta capitalize, and now we’re stuck with a Commodore CEO who wears night driving glasses to make very very very long youtube videos.
I’ve been following this, and it’s still not entirely clear to me what they have actually acquired that has any value other than for nostalgia points. I suppose it’s possible they’ve acquired C64 and C128 related IP?
The Amiga stuff is what I’m more interested in, and I don’t think they got anything in Amiga land. AmigaOS is owned by Hyperion, and the ROMs are owned by Cloanto, and I’m not even sure if that situation is entirely settled. This doesn’t solve that for anyone who actually wants to use their Amiga gear, as far as I can tell, and that makes me a bit sad.
I do like that they’ve engaged some of the OG Commodore folks, and I’m looking forward to hearing about what they have planned, but I don’t (yet) buy that this is in any way good for the community other than giving us another place to throw our nostalgia bucks.
I have at least one of every Amiga ever produced, and multiple of most (total of 30-35ish) and I’d love to see more ready access to the bits. Manuals and specs would be lovely.
Time will tell. I like that things are happening, but I’m not super optimistic that it’ll result in anything I care about.
