I'm pretty sure this essay got used and re-used several times.

This particular version of the essay is for Windows 2000. I'm reasonably sure the Windows 3.11, 95 or 98 version had "pooed a $BRANDNAME database" into C:\
I'll also bet money that "pooed" is there because "shat" caused some DDJ pearl clutching.
Agreed on reuse and indeed "shat", but oddly, no, it was the Paradox embedded DB engine that did tend to excrete files in the root directory, more often than any other.
