Huh, has Raymond ever linked to the BetaArchive wiki before? I would've assumed Microsoft's relationship with that site is strained at best, since they host a lot of their leaked betas and other software.
IIRC they try to make themselves mostly useless for piracy by heavily limiting access to recent releases, and I do support their mission, but it's also not the sort of thing I would expect MS suits to like.
I guess he just found the old KB article by googling and linked to it. Unfortunately, Microsoft deleted the knowledge base articles from their official web, even if some of them are still relevant. See https://retrocomputing.stackexchange.com/questions/31011/where-can-one-read-microsoft-knowledge-base-articles
Are engineers suits?
Another source for that KB article would be Jeff Parsons. He was a well regarded Microsoft employee known for low level systems skills, who now hosts not just KB articles but disk images and browser hosted virtual machines of all sorts of old MS software, including a few betas.
See his comments when starting that archive, and when reading, note he was an MS employee around the time these KB articles were written, and definitely when they were relevant: https://www.pcjs.org/blog/2017/10/13/
It's a shame that very long copyright terms coupled with very short windows of commercial value have left us in a situation where lots of enthusiasts live in a world that's not exactly legal, but also not exactly prohibited.
