For the game Comanche a 1024 * 1024 one byte height map and a 1024 * 1024 one byte color map is used
I'm trying to put this into perspective for 1992: this is 2 megabytes just for the world map. Plus the rest of the game, DOS, drivers, etc: 4 MB of RAM is in the system requirements. From what I can glean from online, it sounds like that was a pretty typical PC around the time the game was released?
My first computer was a 386, and I remember it was a shock when I got Terminator Rampage and it needed whole 4mb RAM. Like it was incomprehensible that something could need so much memory. So, it was just about the time when 4mb started being a thing, but it was considered high end hardware still.
