Backups on FreeBSD and Linux with restic: repositories and snapshots, backup and restore workflows, and using restic with AWS S3 and Google Drive via rclone.
While I like the content, I would suggest the author to read the submission guidelines for lobsters. Submitting this much own content without participating in other discussions is considered self-promotion.
If you like the content, why bring this up at all? It’s a multi part series and personally I’m quite glad to see each part appear like a drip. I’m coincidentally doing something similar myself so seeing another example in action is very helpful.
I was just thinking to myself this morning actually, "I have been trying to bite off this system in one huge chunk, but I admire the way this person is doing it in incremental steps and building on each layer"
As with all reasonable rules, it exists because somebody violated them before they were codified, and in so doing pissed people off.
If you think the rule shouldn't exist, lobby for that. Don't complain that people point out rules violations.
My thought on seeing this was "this again? is this the last one?". Once at the beginning and once at the end is enough; perhaps twice enough.
I agree but I think bringing it up and prefacing it with 'I like the content' is not the worst idea. It stops a mod seeing the posts on their own and banning the user off the bat.
Also theoretically one should not fill out the text field in this case. But most rules seem to largely be ignored by most submitters.
Appreciate the reminder, and thanks for the kind words about the content. This is a series I’ve been writing over a longer period, but I agree that I should space out submissions and engage more in other threads.
Semi-related question: is there actually a way to mount a SMB2/SMB3 share on FreeBSD? I have not been able to figure it out, if so.
mount.cifs should do it.
I searched for "mount.cifs FreeBSD" and indeed found a man page on the FreeBSD website: https://man.freebsd.org/cgi/man.cgi?query=mount.cifs&sektion=8&apropos=0&manpath=CentOS+7.1
But on closer inspection, that's a CentOS man page (hosted on freebsd.org for some reason).
It refers to a cifs-utils package which doesn't exist on FreeBSD. I can't find any indication that mount.cifs exists on FreeBSD, can you point me to the correct package?
Blast. That was my source, too, which seemed so obvious, and had the obvious (SMB => CIFS) clue that could be easily missed.
