Several minutes of doom-and-gloom later, I was starting to get the external OpenBSD drive ready again, when I got a BIOS screen about the CMOS being corrupt, is it OK to recompute? Of course it disappeared before I could read it all.
Windows probably had "Secure Boot" (sic) enabled.
