I found this via restic's support for the spec. It has come in handy for excluding caches not located in ~/.cache.
A quick search on my machine tells me there's 2 sources of it: 1. Rust/cargo (mostly /target/ directories. 2. %TEMP%\fontconfig\cache
Neat!
Not only is this a good idea for caching! But, i think using files like XYZ.tag is pretty great in general. I recall so many, many years ago, when i first started seeing/learning about README files, and had thought it so simple and yet elegant a solution for its purpose. So now *.tag files - and especially the CACHEDIR.tag - seem so simple and yet quite elegant!!! Kudos and thanks for sharing!
