The insight underlying that is that any waveform can be expressed as a sum of sine waves of different frequencies. Which is unintuitive [to me], but once you accept it, it begs the question of how you figure out what those sine waves are.
That's a rock solid analogy I don't recall coming across before. I'll use it next time this comes up. I'm not sure if it count as "coding related" enough for Lobsters, but thanks for posting anyway.
