What happened to Metalink?

I remembered Metalink once again as I was looking for a protocol for downloading files from HTTP mirrors transparently.
It seems like Metalink has succeeded at releasing 2 RFCs (5854 and 6249) but failed to get traction. curl removed its support in 2021 (after ~9 years) and no web browser ever supported it in the first place.
Does anyone know what happened to it and why? Given how popular BitTorrent got, and how big the Web is and how popular CDN services have become, it’s surprising to me that Metalink failed to gain adoption.
