As someone who really likes the fediverse as a user I think it's good that folks are thinking about a lot of these topics that do come up a fair amount when discussing ActivityPub. Here are some of the more exciting ideas they discussed that I liked.
- Uses hashes to identify content rather than relying on URLs. This ensures that content can be retrieved even if the original server is down. This would be a huge perk given the somewhat ethereal nature of servers.
- Pet name system. This is definitely something we need as the sheer number of servers making "reserving usernames" impossible.
- Goblins stuff is super interesting but I'll admit I don't know much about it as a thing. Passing messages between objects seems more scalable and good?
- Server Dependency. This is maybe the big one for most people that I know. If my server goes down without warning, how can I continue with my existing social graph? I think abstracting away the concept of hosting from the concept of your account is pretty critical.
