The link doesn’t mention the biggest news: X11 support has been dropped (upstream, at least).

No clue if any distros will be patching that back in.

I think I didn't like "GNOME 3" when it came out, so I switched to Mate Desktop with xmonad. Which I loved.

But at some point I saw a video for PaperWM and switched to GNOME back again. And I've been there for... I dunno, since 2020? Not sure.

I am enjoying somewhat that three of my colleagues switched to Niri (two from Hyprland, one from plain GNOME) very recently :)

GNOME gets a lot of flak, but for me it's fine. I don't die if I don't have PaperWM.

I think I used KDE many many years ago and went through all the menus and customized everything. I've given it a go a couple of times recently and... it didn't click for me. Customization felt overwhelming (that's me being an old man, I think) and the defaults seemed... to much. I don't doubt it's great for a lot of people.

Other stuff beyond PaperWM:

I've never dailyed GNOME myself (sway ftw), but it's always really impressed me how cohesive of an experience and design language the GNOME devs have managed to create in an open source desktop environment. Also, apparently screen reader support in GNOME and a bunch of the GNOME apps is quite good as of the last few years? Huge win for accessibility.
