It's interesting to see this adopted instead of other established options, but it does seem to have some benefits in a situation where you control the whole pipeline. Even so, I might prefer an existing standard be used. Recently, APV has been looking like a great choice for a mezzanine codec. It seems APV could provide the same latency characteristics at a significantly lower bitrate, and I found Lynne's comment on this GitHub issue to be very informative:

At the end of the day, it doesn't really affect me which codec Valve chooses for this specific use case. If I were implementing something myself, I would more likely reach for APV based on my admittedly limited experience in this space. I wonder what all went into choosing this relative newcomer.
