I unfortunately recognise myself in this, to the point that part 6 and part 7 were difficult to read.

We went all in.

He was right. I made it work anyway :)

I still find this sort of attitude repellent, but the author is correct in their assertion that the only power one has is in how one decides to react to the external world.

I've only been able to move along this journey by finding in myself an acceptance of my own powerlessness that could almost be described as religious.

The imposition, the injustice, the pride, these things exist, and yet, what am I to do, spend then next forty years of my life raging against the dying of the light?

If I were in a financial position to do so, I would probably have rejected this change and retired as a curmudgeonly old coot, but I am not. What that leaves me with is a self-identity that is not as much under my own ownership as I thought it was, which is a traumatic thing to realise.
