Chasing down why installing the kernel segfaulted

I was rather surprised to see this and went to send a PR after discussing it with @calvin, only to find I'd been beaten to it.

I've made an attempt to persuade upstream to drop support entirely and Eric Biggers has kindly chipped in as well.
