This is a neat project, but the article is AI-authored (gptzero says 81% AI) and the "$1" in the title is deceptive. I don't think you can buy even just the display for less than $3, let alone the battery, microcontroller, buttons, and jump wires. It's a shame the author couldn't be bothered to give a better writeup.
The cheapest OLED on Digikey is $2.50, so I assume he already had that on hand and isn't counting it.
From chinese sources you can get tiny SSD1306 OLEDs for £0.60. (I have done so)
So giving some benefit of the doubt, maybe $1 is just about doable, with a squint. (But the $0.09 figure for CH32V003 is in volume as it says in the article, which is a bit misleading, but we can give benefit of the doubt.) Then there's a battery in there too? Seems tight but maybe not impossible
