Wendell Berry passed away yesterday. I think the 9 standards stated at the end of the essay can be quite useful working in software and deciding which tools to use, ironically. One could even adapt the arguments slightly to come up with some reasons not to use LLMs... the loss of community in particular. The expense and lack of repairability. Interesting, interesting!
Oh, thank you for posting this. I read his book "What Are People For?", which contains this essay, a few years ago, and enjoyed it. It definitely gave me a lot to think about. How we, as a society, have perhaps gone wrong in the name of "progress" and greed.
(As an aside, I was college friends with Matt Brown!)
I have only read a couple of the shorter essays and a bit of his poetry, but I've been eying the (very classy looking) Library of America collection of his work. I'm looking forward to reading it. Have you read any of his novels?

Wow, small world! Honestly I didn't even notice the source was from a class's course materials, his work seems fascinating.
That book is, I believe, the only thing by him that I have read. Theres too much to read!
The responses Berry got from magazine readers look very similar to the responses anti-AI folks get. The more things change the more they stay the same.
