Good to see MoQ gaining a CDN network so fast! WebRTC CDNs were as such less, and also very hard to build and scale. This is true even for use cases like one way livestreaming. Steps like this hopefully help with adoption of MoQ much faster
Yes, experience with WebRTC scaling definitely informs how we’ve approached MoQ! I first got into this space when a traditional CDN I was working for at the time decided to deploy a broadcast WebRTC solution back around 2018.
That’s a long time xD
Btw, is this built by the same team as Cloudflare Calls?
Yes, I joined Cloudflare back in March, but we’re all part of a larger Media Platform team and I worked closely with the folks who built Calls (now “Realtime SFU”) to adapt, repurpose, and share some of their control plane tech for MoQ.
Our Realtime SFU has a much more scalable design than most WebRTC systems, partly by making tracks more independent. Effectively, the service acts as a fully distributed SFU. Worth a read if you haven’t seen the architecture blog post before: https://blog.cloudflare.com/cloudflare-calls-anycast-webrtc/
Awesome! I have read this blog before :) Have been following all the amazing work Cloudflare has been doing in the space for a while. In fact, my previous company http://dyte.io/ which gave me a chance to work on all this recently joined Cloudflare xD
