We recently got fibre to the home at our place in rural Ireland. With a 1Gbps link I took the opportunity to update our main router (chose a GL.iNet Flint 2) and make sure our wireless access points were well supported by OpenWRT (all have MediaTek Filogic chipsets).
It's very satisfying to have all these devices on the same open source OS. Some things I find useful:
And that's without even mentioning the ability to install all kinds of software such as Pi-hole etc!
Kudos to the OpenWRT developers. If you haven't nerded out on your home network, it might be worth a try - I've had a lot of fun and now enjoy a super fast, secure and stable home LAN running on open source software.
OpenWrt is just great. Been using it for several years now and it's been really solid. Thanks to all the contributors!
I upgraded my WRT1900ACS v2 this morning without a problem, but then I've already been running the release candidates since 2 or 3. I won't consider a router that doesn't have OpenWrt support, and OpenWrt has allowed me to greatly extend the lives of used, good-enough routers for my modest home needs. I am very excited for the OpenWrt Two (the One doesn't quite fit anything I need; I've always used an all-in-one Wi-Fi router with a few ports).
Updated a friend's router a few hours ago, didn't realise that the release I downloaded was so fresh until I saw its ssh motd telling me to use apk.
After upgrading I had to "kick" his NBN connection for WAN DHCP to succeed, possibly because of the DUID changes people mention in the release thread. (This is a silliness of the NBN infrastructure, ie an Australia-specific issue. You either have to do this or wait something like half an hour for the old lease to expire).
