Honestly it's pretty similar to the rules of optimization.
Rule 1: don't

This page on why unsolicited software evangelism is bad includes a bit at the bottom evangelizing ad blockers. And it's funny, because while it tells me I'm not using an ad blocker, most sites that display actual ads complain that I am using an ad blocker.

These things annoy me. I am using an ad blocker, just not their particular flavour of ad blocker: Firefox's built-in enhanced tracking protection set to strict. This is clever/simple enough to distinguish a div containing an id with ad in it, and actual tracking.
