Why ed(1)?

I think the last time I was forced to use ed (or an ed-like editor) was on a cartridge based assembler for the Tandy Color Computer. Even the Tandy 16B running Xenix (from 1983) that I had for a period of time had vi running on it.
I use unconfigured vim for similar reasons, but edconf was always my hero.
I should start an sl account.
I was wondering how viable would it be to have ed as a backend of a remote editor. Think VS Code remoting, but without downloading anything on the server end, just using ed.
Pretty viable! Sam, arguably ed's successor in Unix and Plan 9, has such a feature. And the updated (but archived) version by @lorddimwit uses SSH for the communication between the two halves.
