To give you an idea of how janky Amiga OS 1 was:

I remember seeing and playing with AmigaOS 1.whatever, and being impressed by having a bitmapped display that actually did stuff, compared with my Sinclair QL, which had to be told practically everything.

I got my job to buy an Amiga as an inexpensive alternative to a Mac so that I could write and run programs on the same machine that could also do desktop publishing under System 6. The Amiga 3000T was on sale for whatever reason, so work bought one for me.

Holy cow! It was sharp, clean and easy to use. I didn't know that it was going to come with this new AmigaOS 2.whatever, but it did, and it was really something.

A year or two later, it could run Mac software at the same time it was running AmigaOS, which really made the decision to go with Amiga a good one.

AmigaOS 3.x looks quite similar, all the way up to version 3.2.3 that came out two years ago, and still has the feel of AmigaOS 2.x.
