Feel free to tell what you plan on doing this weekend and even ask for help or feedback.
Please keep in mind it’s more than OK to do nothing at all too!
FOSDEM, which will mainly end up in me trying to get in some rooms, failing and just ending up in the cafeteria for some drinks and hacking.
Shepherding the Package Manager Dev room at FOSDEM on saturday
I'm heading to Portugal for surgery next month. It's gonna be a huge adjustment but it's something I've been waiting for for over a decade.
FOSDEM! Presenting in containers dev room first thing, then enjoying the conference. Likely visit the music and retro dev rooms, and connect with some Debian and Java people.
I’ll be at FOSDEM, mostly in the containers and kernel rooms I think.
Learning pottery with my kids, ice skating outside, and a local ice sculpture festival.
I've been huddled down working a lot the past few weeks and dealing with the snow storms in the North East so I'm really looking forward to being outside in sunny-winter weather and doing things not on a screen :-)
Same here. As much ice skating as possible. Potentially even some wild ice skating with temperatures going to -8-10 this weekend.
Jealous of both of you. I love ice skating and am fortunate to live near an indoor rink, but there’s precious few opportunities for outdoor skating in the UK. which countries are you enjoying it in?
Around Berlin most lakes seem to be already quite frozen and we're looking at four nights at -5C or lower coming up.
I guess I'll bring an electric drill and a metal/wood (?) bit to check the ice thickness.
(I used to live near the main 400m rink in Amsterdam where I learned to skate as an adult.)
At FOSDEM, trying to catch up with more people than I think is logistically possible in two days 😅
I've had quite a bit of a Guix-related churn lately:
I'll be at FOSDEM 2026 on both Saturday and Sunday. I'm also giving a talk in the Social Web Room on Saturday.
Hacking on my Soulseek client in Gleam. I'm trying to formalize the peer connection handshake logic into an actor with well-defined types and it's challenging! The handshake is attempted both ways and, according to the nicotine+ (a desktop Soulseek client) developer, the first party to send the init message "wins" and the other connection is closed. I feel like there's several non-obvious failure modes here. I was thinking of modeling it in TLA+ but I barely remember what I learned last time I tried reading Lamport's book lol.
On Sunday morning I'm seeing The Apartment at a movie theater. And I'm probably gonna play GTA IV with the partner.
Hope everybody else has fun at FOSDEM, I'm hoping to be there next year.
I haven't heard soulseek mentioned in a while... How active is the network nowadays?
It seems fine to me. I upload lots of stuff and whatever I'm searching for, I usually find. I don't hang out in the chatrooms but last I checked there's lots of idlers.
Continuing to learn Unreal Engine. It's probably the most interesting thing I've done in years. I love the blueprints system. Hoping to make a small game this year.
Game development is a beast! Been a professional developer for over a decade, also been building games every now and then on the side, still as hard as it always been haha :) Good luck! Personally I got the furthest once I learned ECS, finally made it possible for me to build bigger games.
Thanks! ECS is in the plan, yes. There are many scary acronyms to learn, especially the ones related to Unreal: GAS, GASP, IK, etc. :)
Fiddling with automagic IPv6 ULA tunnels to bridge networks securely over the Internet.
Maybe some more work on my Godot top-down shooter.
Fixing my broken/out of date Linux machine, maybe trying out Hyprland. On the non-computing side, playing some Silksong and taking my 4yo to a monster truck show.
Not at FOSDEM like everyone else, but I’m looking forward to watching Pierre-Yves and Raphaël’s talks on Mercurial when the recordings are up! The main one is called Mercurial, 20 years and counting: how are we still alive and kicking?. There is also one about our use of Rust in hg.
Finally getting started on my own company after finally getting a sale this morning. Will probably involve a whole bunch of planning and ordering long lead-time components before any actual coding gets done but can't wait to get started!
I am building a Gameboy emulator which I then intend to port to an ESP32 and wire it all up and basically DIY a handheld Gameboy.
I spent my childhoold playing Pokemon games on the GB family of emulators, but I never had a real Gameboy. So just building it :p
I got some valuable feedback about Nixtamal that I would like to integrate about specifying fetch time for inputs which should help some use cases.
I just open sourced Voiden : https://github.com/VoidenHQ/voiden. Its an api client - I think you will like the design choices.
Studying for second round interviews at two companies next week. Refreshing all my fundamentals and deep diving C++ again.
Hopefully finishing planning a vacation that's been stressing me out for a couple weeks now. It's gotten to the point where it's fun to look forward to, which is nice.
Hmm, what else should I do this weekend? I should work on some theoretical stuff for Garnet; I had a brain-wave and have been working through the implications of it, and should finish up some of the more complicated corners. I want to hang out with a friend who is visiting the area. And maybe I can even enjoy the snow a bit without freezing to death.
Maybe add more customization options to https://kitty.cards (a little side-project to simplify adding customizable Apple Wallet cards)
