Lemmy Development Update June 2026 and 1.0.0-beta.1

Every time I see Lemmy be successful I have a jealous "that could have been me" moment, because my initial foray into ActivityPub was done through building a link aggregator. And to this day I maintain that my design is better than theirs: do away with groups/subreddits and encourage communities to put instances up that fulfill that role, leading to a lot of small communities being formed instead of groups of instances duplicating the same communities over and over.

I have a series of answers to why? and how? questions about it, but sadly in the recent 2-3 years my work has focused on other parts of the GoActivityPub and Brutalinks was mostly neglected. I hope to get back to it after I'm done with releasing version 1.0 of the library, as it was a labour of love, and I still believe in the potential of the project.

That being said, the lemmy devs have invested a lot of work in getting the project to this level and building a community around it at the same time, and I am happy for their success.
