It was nice to see a post regarding php implementation, but then it ended up with the same tiresome argument regarding the old function names :(

  Wasn't my intention to bash PHP, sorry! I know PHP's trying to shed some of the unfortunate consequences of its roots, it's just confusing (and a little maddening) to see that positive momentum side-by-side with the remaining subtleties and edge cases in existing APIs.
