What are you doing this weekend?

Feel free to tell what you plan on doing this weekend and even ask for help or feedback.

Please keep in mind it’s more than OK to do nothing at all too!

As little as possible. (I'm a teacher and just out for winter break.) For fun, I've been working through MIT's operating system class. So I will probably poke around their kernel code and do some lab exercises. If anyone else finds this fun, there are also video recordings of the class and discussion of the RISC-V xv6 kernel. The class videos seem to have been recording over Zoom during the pandemic, so they have all the problems of Zoom teaching. Still, it's better than nothing if you're doing the course on your own.

Recovering from a respiratory illness, and then (assuming symptoms have continued to diminish) getting a train to meet my partner who lives on the other side of the country to spend Christmas and new years with her and her family.

I had my last day of work this year on Thursday so the long weekend (until Jan 5th) started for me today.

While doing several other projects I also decided to pick up the project of moving my blog out of Wordpress. There is no need for me to have an interactive website and MySQL repeatedly has mangled my non-ASCII content which is easier to fix in Markdown than it is in SQL. (Never ever will I touch MySQL ever again.)

So lots of noodling, trying out various half-baked projects, seeing if the Hugo exporter can be made to work etc.

Just playing some videogames and decompressing, probably. I didn't take any winter vacations this year (didn't have any left) but most people at my workplace are gonna be on vacation and I mostly got tasked with improving the codebase, which is something I find relaxing. I'm going to be taking it easy and see if I find the energy to work on the remarkable 2 stuff.

Trying to resurrect my old desktop that has an actual GPU on it to see if I can run any of the open-weight LLM models locally.

Took the family to the Wirral peninsular to collect a luggage guard for the new estate car, to make it safer to carry the dog around (and stop him slobbering in the ears of anyone sat in the back seat.)

Still chasing down an electrical annoyance in the car too, flashes up with charging system fault occasionally but doesn’t appear to have a charging system fault. Plenty of people reporting an issue online, a handful with fixes posted as well, so working my way through checking the various bits of the electrical system and replacing anything that seems corroded or is a known weak point. (Seems the main issue is Ford put a battery management system in the car instead of just charging the battery to a known voltage point which they did in years past. System isn’t super reliable, so phantom errors occur. Sigh.)

Advent of Code on Medley Interlisp, if I get enough free time.
