was not aware of the per-device certification requirement. is that (part of) the reason why so few laptops have modems, even though it’s an obviously useful feature for a portable computer?
Might be one of the reasons, which further increased the price. But Wifi is widely available and tethering working quite well. I personally like the idea of using mobile network directly but doesn’t want to pay for an SIM and data plan in addition to my home internet.
I don't know if this is still the case, but in the past, the firmware were also buggy as hell. It can take 6 months to 1 year to have a firmware able to connect and keep the connection up. I have experienced these issues with a Qualcomm Gobi 2000 and a Sierra Wireless EM7345. And they are difficult to upgrade without Windows.
Personally, I prefer to tether to a phone.
