...why is it my editor should have an opinion on what files I open or edit?
It’s not about opening or editing files, but rather about executing (portions of) them without any user interaction except opening them.
This was fine when one trusted all the sources of one’s files, but in a world where one regularly downloads files from random strangers it is no longer safe to execute code willy-nilly.
