Littered home directory is a lost cause in my book. A convention that works for me is to store all personal files in ~/docs instead.

Application don't recognize ~/docs as an official folder, so it stays litter-free. I mount ~/docs ontop an external SSD, so the entirety of my digital life is in one folder, on one drive. This alleviates all the woes with littering applications, I can recommend it to everyone :)
