My point of writing this is that any attempt to monetize the open-source free space of static site generators has failed in the past, and is inherently paradoxical and antithetical.

While I liked the walk down memory lane, I wish he had put this in the title instead. It's a take that is common among OSS enthusiasts but not one that I care to rehash.

SSGs do not have to be inaccessible to non-technical users. In fact Radio UserLand was one of the earliest SSGs and a pioneer of RSS, and Salon.com offered it as a benefit for subscribers to enjoy blogging:

Just found out about this. Built my graphics programming blog and multiple websites with eleventy and had wonderful interactions with Zach. FOSS landscape is becoming tough it seems.
