Backend abstraction was overkill. A unifying trait across IMAP/Maildir/Notmuch/Sendmail looked tidy on paper but was a maintenance tax in practice.
This was my main concern when I stopped looking at himalaya (as something to invest time into making a TUI for). I didn't want to be super judgey and opinionated on it at the time, so I'm happy to hear that this is backed out and will take another look soon.
The project grew quite fast, the architecture that was good at the beginning became a nightmare to maintain at some point. I found it challenging to adapt both at the same pace! Happy to finally reached the v2.
Regarding a TUI, there is a work in progress on a ratatui, you may find it interesting:
