Is this just marketing spam?
When I saw that random() was available in Polypane 29, I immediately wanted to try it out.
But the article is itself writing by Polypane. Is this just slop?
Original author here. It's not slop, just authentic handwritten clunkiness. What I meant was "As i was updating Polypane to Chromium 148 and going over the newly available experimental features, I saw that random() was available. I immediately wanted to try it out". I'll update the article!
That makes sense! Sorry to have assumed something different. These days you never know... Anyways, it's a really cool post!
When doing design, do you actually want things to be random and different every time? As a non-designer, I thought web authors would prefer control and uniformity of an experience across different devices and users.
I can think of layout uses, like randomising the order of items in a survey to avoid biasing results, or adding some variation to a pop out hover effect on a handcrafted style site to avoid it feeling too rigid. Seems like lots of fun micro interactions and such, though I haven't given much thought to all the possibilities.
