Dynamically Naming Servers

A lot of open source firewall/router solutions have supported this natively for a good long while. On my OPNsense setup, I do tend to give things static IPs because I experiment a lot and occasionally break DNS. But I'm reasonably sure that I also have it set up such that when a device sends a DHCP request with its hostname, the DHCP server will hand it an IP address from the dynamic pool and also automatically add an entry to unbound (the DNS server) as well.
I don't know anything about Ubiquiti's gear, but I understand it has a large following. I'd be a little surprised if it didn't support this out of the box. Although the author doesn't say what they are (or were) doing for DNS, so maybe that's the sticking point.
I had a slightly different problem, which was being able to access things consistently. I decided to rely on Bonjour and hostname.local, but it became a problem to access things remotely until I decided to just default to Tailscale and implement https://rcarmo.github.io/projects/mdnsbridge
