Maybe I'm naive, but I figure if you invest significant amounts of your own or your client's money, you're a bit more well-read and knowledgeable than the average person[1]. It boggles the mind that anyone in that position is taking the pitch made by Starlink/xAI seriously in any way, shape or form.
The only way that datacenters in space would make any sort of sense is if there's an immediate and draconian worldwide ban on terrestrial datacenters. And if that's your threat model, why would 10 rocket launches a day be excempt from that sort of regulation?
[1] I purposefully didn't use "intelligent" here
Data center in space is a dumb idea on pretty much every level, but so is the hyperloop, yet somehow that didn't end Elon Musk's career either. It was the moment where I flipped the bozo bit on him in my mind though.
I flipped the bozo switch when he overpromised on Full Self Driving. I would pay extra NOT to have FSD on my car.
David Rosenthal, formely of Sun Microsystems, on the impact plans to create orbiting AI datacenters would have on the ozone layer.
