You know, I love the sound of this, but I really wouldn’t touch anything by 37Signals with a 10-foot pole.
Curious, why ? :-)
He seems very prone to change his opinions on the whim of a hat (and presumably bring his employees along the ride with him), he went from all-in on Windows to all-in on Ubuntu. Now he’s presumably all in on this instead.
I feel like DHH is pretty much how I’d be if I had so much money that I wouldn’t have to work. I imagine that it wouldn’t remove the need to do things, but the reason to do things just would only sometimes have anything at all to do with reality.
Making a perfect Linux is definitely one of the many things I fantasize about on vacations.
Dragging your employees along the ride seems a bit evil though and hopefully not what I will do once I’m that rich. I suppose it helps that I’m not projected to have any employees.
I wonder how long until he’s all-in on Nix and the inevitable follow-up where he wants nothing to do with it in favour of another half-solution.
To be fair, he was a Mac person for a really long time, more than 2 decades. Now he is exploring other options as he realized Apple’s current practices are unfair towards small companies.
Perhaps, the problem is that he is too enthusiastic about new things and he should let the dust settle down. I don’t find it surprising that he likes Arch, as it’s a local maximum in terms of simplicity and low friction.
He hasn’t explored NixOS yet, but I don’t expect him to like it as he will probably dislike some of the NixPkgs complexity, but it’s another interesting local maximum in the design space.
Now he is exploring other options as he realized Apple’s current practices are unfair towards small companies.
Sure but like, dude says Macs are better, this is the way, other ways are not the way. Then Apple reaches into his pocket and he responds not by switching to Linux as a principled stance, but by asserting that actually Apple is not good and is in fact bad. It turns out Linux is good, it is the new way and the only way, and by the way he has created the best Linux.
You know how shitty dudes will call a woman ugly after their advances are rejected? It’s kinda like that. He’s both jilted and self-aggrandizing. It’s annoying.
I say all this as a person who makes his living in Rails and pays for Hey email. He is responsible (in collaboration) for some good stuff.
I agree some of his messages are a bit hyped and self-aggrandizing. But Macs were a much more open back in the 2000s. Choosing Apple was not too much in conflict with the 37signals ethos.
There was great indie, free and non-free, application ecosystem. Although I prefer Linux, I miss that kind of Apple. OFC, Apple grew up and changed, and he learned his excessive shilling for Apple was wrong, and he learned the hard way.
