How AI Is Changing Open Source

Contributing to OSS used to be fun and rewarding. Learning from others, interacting with folks from all over the world, and the satisfaction that comes with landing a feature / bugfix while helping your fellow humans was so, so sweet. Recently, it is more like soulless paid work: find a bug, my LLM fixes it, their LLM reviews / tweaks the fix, fix is merged. There is nothing intrinsically bad about the new way (ignoring ethical issues of LLMs), it is just joyless.

If a project wants to reject AI due to ethical reasons, wasted hours reviewing slop, or a belief that LLMs aren't technically fit then I'm fine with all that. But for me, the reason is much simpler - we do this stuff because we like it.
